And Burn your Leggings.
It’s getting cold out. My heart aches at the thought of packing away my summer skirts and dresses. This year I’m going to avoid it altogether.
I got my tights ready; the knits, the opaques, the sheers, the knee highs and the metallics. But this year my plan is PANTS!
Let me be clear: narrow pants.
Skinny jeans. Leather pants. Stovepipe trousers. Slide them under your dresses! Zip them under your skirts! And f@#k the leggings.
How do you keep your pants game strong under your dress, without looking granola?
No knits. No clingy cotton dresses. And no pencil skirts. The look you’re going for is sleek and simple.
The colours should be the same or hardcore clashing, no in-betweens. This is not a time for matchy-matchy colour combinations. They will make you look shorter and call attention to the absurdity of you wearing both pants and a skirt. It’s ludicrous. I get it. So if you’re going to wear pants and a skirt, wear it proud and take risks. Matchy-matchy is safe. You’re wearing pants under your dress for godsake! Own the look and be effortlessly nonchalant (alike colours) or loud (clashing colours) about it.
My favourite look is an A-line skirt or waisted dress over pants. The A-line/waisted silhouette is flattering on almost anyone, and hides the buttons and belts loops at the top of your pants.
I also love a slip dress overtop jeans. The slip won’t cling to your pants, but it will show everything so be sure you’re wearing well fitted pants that don’t bulge at the waistband.
Finally, there is no clear length that your skirt should be. If you’re wearing a maxi it defeats the purpose of wearing pants (why not just wear long johns!). My rule of thumb is mid-calf if it’s a thin dress like a slip, otherwise at the knee or above.
Now, go forth! Save your dresses from the storage! Give them a new season to shine on. Perhaps some of that summery ethos will carry into Fall and keep the cold and wet at bay.
